YouTube Censorship of Tim Kelly

“To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.”  *

Tim Kelly’s podcasts are some of the best anywhere on the internet in terms of well-researched, well-informed, dispassionate, objective information; but YouTube is ‘soft-blocking’ in an effective effort to limit his latest podcast with the following explanation:

“Certain features have been disabled for this video. In response to user reports, we have disabled some features, such as comments, sharing, and suggested videos, because this video contains content that may be inappropriate or offensive to some audiences.”

First screenshot: when you first land on this podcast –if you are fortunate enough to even find it …

Second screenshot: what it looks like after you agree that you understand and you are willing (brave enough) to proceed…

“The following content has been identified by the YouTube community as inappropriate or offensive to some audiences. I UNDERSTAND AND WISH TO PROCEED

Notice on the second screen shot, almost all YouTube features have been disabled: No comments are allowed; no sharing of this podcast; no suggested videos; no number of viewers; no likes, no dislikes … the big heavy boot of YouTube censorship has come down on Tim, but for what reason? Let’s see if their explanation makes any sense.

So let’s deconstruct:

“Certain features have been disabled for this video. In response to user reports, we have disabled some features, such as comments, sharing, and suggested videos, because this video contains content that may be inappropriate or offensive to some audiences.”

  1. This is not a video as claimed by YouTube. This is a podcast = audio only with one picture on the screen
  2. According to YouTube, it’s not YouTube’s fault, it’s the fault of user reports. They are just responding to user reports. What are the user reports? We have no idea.
  3. This video which is not a video contains content that may be either inappropriate OR offensive to some audiences, but we don’t know which it is. What? Who decides if it is inappropriate? Who is offended and for what reason? We have no idea.
  4. So what is YouTube’s solution? Their solution is to prevent the sharing of this podcast, remove the like or dislike button, remove the number of viewers and remove the comments.

If this podcast is inappropriate or offensive, wouldn’t you want to leave the like and dislike buttons and the comments so those who don’t like it can comment? Yes you would. So this belies YouTube’s false solution above which is about limiting the distribution of this podcast and the information contain within. It also serves as a warning to Tim Kelly not to talk about this topic again. This is a direct attack on everyone’s freedom of speech to limit the transfer of information.
